Fleet Management & Company Responsibilities
Here at F.A.C.T. we believe that the best way
of ensuring you not only meet the current HSE laws but have the
best possible fleet drivers is through training.
TRAINING WORKS IT'S A F.A.C.T.!!!

There are numerous reasons for Fleet Driver Training
the biggest reasons being Safety, Savings and the Law.
Safety – 7
people a day die on British roads and a 1/3 of
fatal or serious accidents on the road involve someone who is at
work (RoSPA). Don't let it be one of your fleet drivers.
Savings – With
fleet driver training and few changes in driving style
your fleet drivers could save up to
20% on fuel and wear/tear costs, whilst saving you
money and helping the environment.
The Law – The current
Health & Safety laws now include the Homicide and Manslaughter
Act 2008, which allows the Health & Safety Executive to prosecute,
without penalty limit, private and public organisations for which
the driver was driving. Drivers can include fleet drivers,
someone who drives once a week to the bank or a volunteer.
The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires you to ensure,
so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of all
employees while at work and this includes driving a company vehicle,
hired vehicle or their own. You also have a responsibility to ensure
that others are not put at risk by your work-related driving activities.
(Self-employed people have a similar responsibility to that of employers.)
A fleet driver and vehicle risk assessment should
be carried out to determine any areas of concern while they are
at work, and to other people who may be affected by their driving.
The Regulations require you to periodically review these risks it
remains appropriate and effective.
Health and Safety law does not apply to commuting, unless the employee
is travelling from their home to a location which is not their usual
place of work.
In short assess all the risks of the
driver, the vehicle and ensure training is given.

F.A.C.T. recommends you:
have a comprehensive, easy to read set of policies and procedures
to keep all employee's and/or volunteers are aware of the organisations
rules and legal requirements. Some things may look like they are
obvious but they may not be to others, e.g. do not drive after consuming
alcohol.
Asses your company drivers are
· competent and capable of doing their work in a way that is
safe for them and others;
· properly trained;
· sufficiently fit and healthy to drive safely.
· provided with information that will help them reduce risk
(eg recommended tyre pressures);
· provided with appropriate advice on driving posture.
Check that all vehicles used (including company
and employee owned)
· fit for the purpose for which they are used;
· maintained in a safe and legal condition using the appropriate
paper work to report and record issues.
Plan Journeys:
· incorporates realistic work schedules;
· does not put drivers at risk from fatigue;
· takes sufficient account of adverse weather and road maintenance.
